Summary

Bambu kuning (Bambusa vulgaris) is bamboo up to 5-10 meters tall of the Poaceae family, originating from Southeast Asia, China, and Japan, with its distribution in Indonesia centered in West Java. Its bright yellow culm is a favorite material for making furniture and handicrafts. Traditionally, bambu kuning is also believed to treat jaundice, kidney stones, and lower fever.

Agroecology

Grows well in open land exposed to direct sunlight. Optimal temperature 8.8-36 °C, minimum rainfall 1,020 mm/year. Tolerant of tropical climates, but the wetter the climate type the better the bamboo growth, because bamboo requires a lot of water. Prefers sandy soil types.

Morphology

  • Roots fibrous, found below the soil surface forming a branching system.
  • Stem emerges from the root, elongated cylindrical shape, hardening, and hollow. Bamboo culm is covered by leaves, yellow when mature, but green when young.
  • Leaves lance-shaped, tapering leaf tip, blunt leaf base. Parallel venation, hairy upper leaf surface while the underside is rough, green in color.

Cultivation

Plant propagation is done using rhizomes, clump or stem cuttings, air-layering, and tissue culture.

Flavonoids, phytosterols, phytophenol, holocellulose, alpha cellulose, lignin, phenolic acids, lactones, triterpenoid, alkaloids.

Benefits

Treats kidney stones, prevents hepatitis, reduces fever, treats lung inflammation, cough, liver antitoxin and controls bad cholesterol or LDL.

Simplisia

  • Prepare yellow bamboo shoots, wash thoroughly of attached dirt and unwanted foreign material with clean running water.
  • Cut the shoots into small pieces then dry in the sun (indirectly) covered with a black cloth or air-dry over a vessel indoors until dry (about 7 days). Dry-sort.
  • Store in a clean, airtight container.

Traditional recipe Fever from Bambu Kuning

1. Fever

  • Wash 1 handful of bamboo shoots thoroughly then grate. Knead with 1 tbsp honey then strain.
  • Drink the concoction twice a day, 2 tablespoons each time.

2. Cough

  • Cut bamboo as needed. Take 4-5 drops of yellow bamboo water, let sit for 1 day.
  • Drink once a day.
