Summary

Landik (Barleria lupulina) is a shrub up to 1-2 meters tall of the Acanthaceae family, native to Madagascar and distributed as far as Sumatra, Java, and Ambon. This plant has been shown to have antimicrobial and antiamebiasis activity in research, besides being popular as an ornamental hedge. Landik is traditionally believed to treat snake or dog bites and relieve swelling from impact.

Agroecology

Landik lives in forests or fields, growing well up to elevations of 300 m above sea level. Prefers open or slightly shaded places and can grow in almost all soil types, also resistant to hot weather. Climate does not greatly affect its growth.

Morphology

  • Root a taproot, dirty white.
  • Stem round, woody, dark brown, many-branched.
  • Leaves single, opposite, glossy dark green in color, lance-shaped 4-8 x 1-1.5 cm, pointed tip, narrowing base, flat edges, finely hairy, short petiole. A pair of thorns are found on the petiole.
  • Flowers have petals, dark yellow or golden yellow, hairy sepals, flowers clustered in a spike-shaped raceme.
  • Fruit green, found in leaf axils.
  • Seeds blackish-brown and flat.

Cultivation

  • Propagated generatively (seed) or vegetatively (stem cuttings).
  • Propagation through stem cuttings is done by selecting branches that are not too old.
  • Seeds are best pre-sown until they reach a height of 10-15 cm.

Chemical Content

Polyphenol, saponin, flavonoid, essential oil (cyclobutane, benzenedicarboxylic acid, 1-hentetracontanol), iridoid glycoside, lupulinoside, ipolamiide, phlororigidoside.

Benefits

Treats snake or dog bites, swelling from falling or being hit, sores, boils, chronic ulcers, bleeding wounds, rheumatism, toothache.

  • Grind 6-10 fresh landik leaves until fine.
  • Apply to the affected part of the body.

2. Rheumatism

  • Prepare and wash 1 handful of landik leaves thoroughly, then grind finely. Add slaked lime water as needed while kneading into a paste. Apply and rub onto the affected part of the body.
