Barleria prionitis L.
Summary
Landep (Barleria prionitis) is a shrub up to 1.8 meters tall of the Acanthaceae family, originating from India, Sri Lanka, and southern Africa. Its extract is used as a cosmetic ingredient to promote healthy hair, while the polyphenol content of its leaves is believed to be effective against bacteria that cause toothache. Landep is also traditionally used to treat wounds, ringworm, and rheumatism in India and Africa.
Agroecology
This plant can grow in shrubland, forests, and roadsides at elevations up to 600 m above sea level. Prefers full sunlight or partial shade conditions, fertile, moist soil with good drainage. Average annual rainfall 500-900 mm/year.
Morphology
- Roots taproot, round, dirty brown.
- Stem woody, grows upright, square-shaped, jointed, and thorny.
- Leaves single, green, egg-shaped, opposite, stalk length 1 cm, pinnate venation.
- Flowers compound at leaf axils, solitary, 7 cm long, golden yellow.
- Fruit a capsule, egg-shaped, flat, hard, green.
- Seeds egg-shaped, flat, brown in color.
Cultivation
- Propagated using seeds as well as shoot separation and cuttings.
- Take fully mature seeds, then dry them until dry. Then store for a while and they can be directly sown onto the growing area.
Chemical Content
Phenolics, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, phytosterols, phenylethanoid glycoside (barlerinoside), iridoid glycosides (shanzhiside methyl ester, 6-O-trans-p-coumaroyl-8-O-acetylshazhiside methyl ester).

Simplisia
- Pick the leaves then wash with clean running water and drain.
- Air-dry the leaves for several days until the moisture content reaches 10%.
- Store the dried material in a clean, airtight container.

- Wash 15 g fresh landep leaves thoroughly. Add 1/4 tsp slaked lime then pound until mashed.
