Summary

Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera or Brussels sprouts, as its name suggests, is native to Belgium and popularly consumed in the Netherlands and other European countries, though not yet widely known elsewhere. Its protein, vitamins A and C, and potassium content help prevent DNA damage and support body metabolism, while its high fiber content makes this mini cabbage a popular diet menu item for providing lasting fullness.

Agroecology

Brussels sprouts grow well in sandy loam and silty soil, which are most suitable for Brussels sprouts. Grows well in well-drained upland soil. The soil must have the ability to retain good moisture. Soil pH should be 5.8-7.2 for better growth. Brussels sprouts need a cool climate. It is somewhat sensitive to temperature. In warm weather, the sprout clusters loosen quickly. It can tolerate cold conditions. However, the best quality sprouts are produced in clear weather with light frost at night. The suitable temperature for seed germination for optimal growth is 16-20°C.

Morphology

  • Stem cylindrical, green in color and covered with leaves.
  • Leaves green in color; the sprouts form in the leaf axils.
  • Flowers appear during the second year of the plant's growth and are yellow with 4 petals.

Cultivation

Brussels sprouts propagation is done generatively using seed. Seed is sown and grown in high-altitude areas. Seedlings are planted in the field after 4-5 weeks old with a recommended planting spacing of 60 cm x 45 cm and 60 cm x 60 cm.
