Summary

Calendula officinalis or calendula is native to Central and Southern Europe, West Asia, and the United States, and is popularly grown as an ornamental thanks to its beautiful flower color and shape. This aromatic herb has long been used in the Ayurvedic medicine system, with its flowers brewed as a digestion-soothing tea—though not recommended for pregnant women due to the risk of miscarriage. Calendula is also an ingredient in about 200 cosmetic formulations such as creams and lotions, and its essential oil has potential as an insect repellent.

Agroecology

Its growth prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to semi-shade.

Morphology

  • Stem angled, hairy, and solid.
  • Leaves fragrant, green, unifoliate, spear-shaped to oblong, about 10-20 cm long and 1-4 cm wide, the lower ones spatulate. Venation pinnate, margin serrate or toothed, tip acute, obtuse.
  • Flowers aster-like, with marginal flower heads bright yellow to dark orange. Corolla oblong-spatulate, disc florets rounded, tridentate at the top, 1.5-2.5 cm long and 4-7 mm in diameter, with a tubular floret length of 5 mm.
  • Fruit dry, spiny, golden brown, crescent-shaped. Botanically classified as an achene.

Simplisia

  • Prepare an adequate amount of fresh calendula flowers, wash clean with running water.
  • Dry under the sun or with an oven at 40°C until the moisture content reaches 10%.
  • Grind using a blender until it becomes powder.
  • Store in a clean, airtight container.
