Summary

Calamondin (Citrus microcarpa) is a shrub up to 5 meters tall of the Rutaceae family, native to China and widely distributed to Indonesia, the Philippines, and as far as Florida, with the Philippines as the largest producer today. Its high potassium and vitamin C content makes this small fruit a favorite ingredient for cooking, baking, and refreshing drinks. Traditionally, calamondin is also believed to lower cholesterol and relieve cough.

Agroecology

Grows well in lowlands on loamy to sandy loam soil, soil pH 5.5–6.5, well-drained and aerated. Favors partially shaded locations, rainfall of 1,500-2,000 mm/year, humidity of 70-80%.

Morphology

  • Roots taproot.
  • Stem heavily branched, thorny.
  • Leaves simple, oval, tapering at the base and tip. Upper surface dark green, glossy, underside pale green, aromatic.
  • Fruit round, skinned, small, smooth surface, green turning orange when ripe, with oil pores.
  • Flowers white, compound, with 5 petals, pistil and stamens in one flower.

Cultivation

  • Propagated generatively (by seed) and vegetatively (by air layering, top grafting).
  • Before sowing, seeds are air-dried in a location without direct sunlight for 2-3 days until the mucilage disappears.

1. Fever

  • Pick 2-4 handfuls of calamondin leaves.
  • Boil in 2-4 cups of water.
  • Use the decoction to compress a fever patient.
  • Do this by soaking a cloth in the warm decoction, then applying it to the patient's forehead.

2. Weight Loss

  • Wash fresh calamondin fruit thoroughly.
  • Squeeze with a citrus juicer.
  • Strain the juice to obtain 150 ml of calamondin juice.
