Clerodendrum calamitosum L.
Summary
Kembang bugang (Clerodendrum calamitosum) is an upright shrub up to 2.5-3 meters tall of the Lamiaceae family, native to Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula, commonly found around gardens and forest edges. This plant is popular as an ornamental as well as traditional medicine believed to dissolve kidney stones. Kembang bugang is also traditionally used to relieve fever, diarrhea, and hemorrhoids.
Agroecology
Kembang bugang can grow in dry conditions at forest edges, roadsides, and shaded places at elevations of 1,750 m above sea level. Prefers moist, well-drained soil, requires full sunlight to partial shade.
Morphology
- Root a taproot, brown in color.
- Stem woody, branched, 1 cm in diameter, whitish-green in color.
- Leaves single, arranged crosswise opposite, blade ovate-shaped, tip and base tapering, serrated edges, pinnate venation, 4-9 cm long, green in color.
- Flowers compound, panicle-shaped, emerging in leaf axils, 5 white petals. Stamens and pistil stalk protrude beyond the corolla.
- Fruit a drupe, round-shaped, flat, green when young and turning glossy black when ripe, sepal deep red in color.
- Seeds hard-textured, small, black in color.
Cultivation
Propagated vegetatively (root suckers, stem cuttings and offset separation) and generatively (seed).

Saponin, flavonoid, polyphenol, alkaloid, steroid, terpene, cyanogenic glycoside, purpurin, pheophorbide.
Benefits
Dissolves kidney stones or urinary stones, remedy for fever, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, boils, purulent urine and syphilis, stops bleeding, urinary stones, burns, treats snake bites, bloating, anticancer.
Simplisia
- Choose and pick fresh, green, non-rotten kembang bugang leaves.
- Wash the leaves of impurities using running water.
- Dry using an oven at 50°C until dry.
- Blend until fine and sift using a no. 40 sieve.
- Store in a clean and airtight place.

- Wash ±10 g fresh kembang bugang leaves then boil with 1 glass of water for 15 minutes, once cool then strain.
