Summary

Genje (Clerodendrum indicum) is a shrub up to 1.5-3 meters tall of the Lamiaceae family, distributed from Southeast Asia to southern China, generally growing wild though cultivation has begun in the Philippines and Singapore. This plant was introduced as an ornamental plant as well as used in traditional Asian medicine. Genje is believed to help relieve asthma, cough, and sore throat.

Agroecology

Grows ideally at elevations of 0-1,400 m above sea level, with adequate sunlight and moderate rainfall intensity. Drought-tolerant and grows in almost all soil types with high humidity but good drainage, and resistant to salinity.

Morphology

  • Stem round, green in color with a longitudinally cracked texture, hollow center, sympodial branching.
  • Leaves single, short-stalked, tapering leaf base and tip, dark green in color, 7-15 cm long and 3-4 cm wide.
  • Flowers compound, umbrella-shaped, emerging at leaf axils and below the base of the leaf stalk, white petals.
  • Fruit egg-shaped and brown in color.
  • Seeds round, black in color.

Cultivation

Propagated generatively (by seed), and vegetatively (stem cuttings and offshoots).

Chemical Content

Leaves: alkaloids, saponins, polyphenols. Bark: saponins, flavonoids. Roots: polyphenols, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethanol, hispidulin, hispidulin 7-O-glucuronide, eupafolin, scutellarein, clerodendrol, roseoside, lariciresinol 9-O-β-D-glucoside.

Benefits

Treats urinary tract inflammation, asthma, cough, rheumatism, pulmonary tuberculosis, flu and fever, sore throat, respiratory tract inflammation (bronchitis), sprains, and bruises.

1. Urinary Tract Inflammation and Bladder Inflammation

  • Prepare 30 g genje leaves and 30 g snake grass (lidah ular).
  • Wash and boil with 3 glasses of water until 1 glass of water remains, cool and strain. Drink the concoction all at once. Boil the residue again to drink in the evening.
  • Drink the concoction twice a day.

2. Fever in Children

  • Boil 10-15 g dried genje root with 3 glasses of water until 1 glass of water remains. Once cool, strain and drink all at once.
  • Do this 3-4 times a day until recovered.
