Crinum jagus (J.Thomps.) Dandy

Bakung harum (Crinum jagus) is a perennial herb up to 90 cm tall from the Amaryllidaceae family that originates from tropical Africa, spread from Angola to Nigeria and Sudan. In Southern Nigeria, this plant is traditionally used to treat memory loss and other mental symptoms associated with aging. Its beautiful form and fragrant aroma make bakung harum a favorite ornamental plant in gardens and pots.

Bakung harum is easily grown in soil rich in organic matter, moist, and well-drained, in full sun to partial shade.

• Roots fibrous.
• Bulb tapering to a neck up to 15 cm long.
• Leaves linear, wider at the tip than at the base, emerging from the ground surface, pale green on the underside but glossy green on the upper surface, blunt tip, average length about 7 times the average width.
• Flowers tulip-like, blooming in clusters atop a leafless stalk usually rising 5-7.5 cm above the leaf clump, with 6 curved stamens, 6 petals, white on both surfaces, with yellowish-green streaks on the lower surface, smooth on top, fused at the base into a tube, enclosing a long, thread-like style ending at the ovary.

Propagation vegetatively by bulb division.

Phenolic compounds including {crinamine, lycorine, pseudolycorine, 6-hydroxycrinamine, hamayne, tetrahydro-1,4-oxazine (morpholine), bowdensine, and demethoxy-bowdensine}, saponins, tannins, calcium oxalate, calcium tetrate, alkaloids, and glycosides.

Has antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Used to treat memory loss and other mental symptoms associated with aging (Alzheimer's), asthma, coughs, wounds, venomous snake bites.
