Dimocarpus longan Lour.
Summary
Longan (Dimocarpus longan) is a tree up to 40 meters tall of the Sapindaceae family, known for 2,000 years and originating from the mountains of Myanmar to South China. Its sweet fruit can be eaten fresh or made into a drink, while the dried form is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Longan is also believed to support eye and skin health and boost the body's immunity.
Agroecology
Suitable for planting in lowlands between 200-600 m above sea level, rainfall of 1,500-2,000 mm/year, with 4-6 dry months, groundwater level between 50-200 cm. Air temperature 18-30 °C and relative humidity 65-95%. Grows well in sandy, loose soil with sufficient nutrients and soil pH 5.5-6.
Morphology
- Roots are deep taproots.
- Stem is woody and hard, with many branches, diameter up to 1 m.
- Leaves compound, each stalk has 2-4 leaflets, glossy green upper surface, pinnate venation.
- Flowers compound, yellowish-brown in color.
- Fruit round or oval, clustered. Skin green (young), yellowish-brown (ripe), slightly bumpy surface.
Cultivation
- Propagated generatively (by seed) and vegetatively (by air-layering and grafting).
- Longan seedlings aged 6-12 months can be planted in the field with a planting distance of 10 m x 10 m.
Chemical Content
Stem: scopoletin and stigmasterol. Leaves: quercetin and flavonoids. Fruit: riboflavin, vitamin B, C, amino acids. Seeds: phenolics, saponins. Fruit peel: gallic acid, glycosides, flavones (quercetin, kaempferol), and hydroxycinnamates.

Simplisia
- Select fresh longan leaves. Clean off any attached dirt. Wash and drain.
- Slice the leaves and place on a tray, then dry in the sun covered with a thin dark cloth.
- Once dry, put into a clean, tightly sealed, airtight plastic bag.

1. Energy or Stamina Booster
- Take 30 g dried longan flesh, 30 g dried mulberries, 2 g dried ginseng, honey as needed.
- Wash all ingredients thoroughly, boil with 800 ml water until reduced to 400 ml, then strain.
- Add honey to taste, then drink twice a day, 200 ml each time.
