Summary

Dorstenia elata, known as Anthurium Tusuk Konde Hitam (black hairpin anthurium), is a plant from Brazil's tropical rainforest that is endangered in the wild, found mainly in the states of Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro. Its hairpin-shaped flowers make it popular as an ornamental, while its high antioxidant content makes it part of local traditional medicine. In some regions, this plant is even used as a culinary ingredient.

Agroecology

This plant prefers moist sandy locations. It makes a good ornamental in low light, able to withstand wet soil, dry soil, bright light, and near darkness. It grows best in light, moist, sifted soil that is allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. Anthurium tusuk konde will not tolerate overly wet soil.

Morphology

  • Stem round and flexible, underground.
  • Leaves glossy dark green, lanceolate, up to 25 cm long and 10 or 11 cm wide, creating a beautiful foliage rosette. Petiole up to 15 cm long, with a spread of 45 to 60 cm.
  • Flowers dark purple, the flowering structure is called a hypanthodium, where the fleshy receptacle forms a hollow ball-like structure with an apical opening. Three types of flowers develop on the inner surface of the receptacle: female flowers toward the base, male flowers toward the opening, and short-styled sterile flowers in between. The inflorescence is held on a sturdy stalk, and rises above the foliage.
