Euphorbia antiquorum L.
Summary
Antique spurge (Euphorbia antiquorum) is a thorny succulent up to 1-3 meters tall of the Euphorbiaceae family, native to the Indian Peninsula and widely naturalized across tropical Asia, from China to the Philippines. Its unique shape makes it popular as a boundary hedge and yard ornamental. Its sap is traditionally used to treat fever, malaria, and toothache, though it must be used with caution due to its irritant properties.
Agroecology
This plant grows well in all soil types, with sunlight intensity reaching 70-80% for 6-8 hours a day, temperature of 21-27 °C, rainfall of 2,500-3,000 mm/year. Sometimes grows on layers of brick and charcoal fragments, and sandy loam soil.
Morphology
- Stem 5-7 cm thick, green, hairless, branching from the upper part, curving upward, segmented. The sap has a pungent, sticky smell.
- Leaves short-stalked, few, fleshy, 8-12 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, dark green on top, slightly paler underneath.
- Flowers small, umbrella-shaped with 3 blooms emerging from the fin recesses, pale yellow.
- Fruit round, 1 cm in diameter.
Cultivation
Propagated generatively (by seed) and vegetatively (by cuttings/grafting).
Chemical Content
Taraxerol, taraxerone, friedelan-3-β-ol, epifriedelanol, sterols, antiquol A and B, euphol, cycloeucalenol, flavonoids, cycloartenol, sitosterol, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins.
Benefits
Heals diarrhea, fever, malaria, ear inflammation in children, toothache, asthma, rheumatism, constipation; treats snakebites; treats swelling, boils, and skin problems.
Simplisia
- Slice the stem thinly, then fry or roast with rice until it turns brown. Can also be sun-dried or dried at 30-65 °C (until a moisture content of 9-10% is obtained).
- Once dry, grind using a blender and sift into a powder.
- Pack in an airtight container and store at room temperature.

1. Ear Inflammation in Children
- Take a sufficient amount of fresh antique spurge stem and remove the skin. Pound finely and squeeze.
- Drip the resulting liquid into the child's affected ear. Do this 4-6 times a day, 2-3 drops.
2. Boils, Pyoderma (Pus-Filled Skin Inflammation)
- Slice the stem thinly. Warm over low heat.
- Apply to the boil or inflamed skin.
