Summary
Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) is an annual or biennial herb 60-100 cm tall from the Gentianaceae family native to the southern United States. Its rose-like flower shape with a vase life of up to six weeks makes it a high-value cut flower, cultivated in Cipanas and Malang. Lisianthus also has active compounds with potential as an anticancer therapeutic ingredient.
Agroecology
Lisianthus can grow on all soil types with a pH of 6.5-7 and a soil temperature of 15°C. Moist, well-drained soil in full sun.
Morphology
- Roots fibrous, composed of small thread-like fibrous roots.
- Stem round in shape with the same size from base to tip, with a smooth green surface. Grows upright and forms forked branching.
- Leaves sessile, consisting of thin, soft leaf blades directly attached to or sitting on the stem without a petiole. Based on venation pattern, lisianthus leaves belong to the curved-veined type. The leaf arrangement of lisianthus is such that at one node there are two opposite leaves, and at the next node the two leaves cross with the leaves before or after it.
- Flowers come in various colors, namely purple, pink, blue, and white. Lisianthus flowers have an appearance nearly identical to roses. Lisianthus flowers are complete and perfect. The flower stalk has a round cross-section and is green like the main stem. The base of the lisianthus flower is flat shaped, meaning the flower parts sit at the same height above the flower base. The corolla of the lisianthus flower has regular symmetry with the petals arranged in a bowl shape. The stamens, as the male reproductive organ, consist of a green filament and an anther that is yellow to brown, with its entire surface covered in yellow pollen. The pistil is green and only one per stalk. The ovary sits above the flower base so that the sides of the ovary are not attached to the flower base. The style is larger and longer than the filament, so the stigma sits slightly higher than the stamens.
Cultivation
Lisianthus can be propagated vegetatively or generatively. Vegetatively, this plant is propagated by cuttings. However, this method generally requires a lot of labor and time with limited results, while generatively the plant is propagated using seed. This method is also rarely used because of low seed production and seed germination rate.
