Summary

Sambang darah (Excoecaria cochinchinensis) is a small shrub 0.5-2 meters tall of the Euphorbiaceae family, native to China and Southeast Asia, distributed as far as the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia. Its reddish-purple leaves make it a popular ornamental and living fence plant. Sambang darah is traditionally believed to treat dysentery and postpartum bleeding.

Agroecology

Easily found growing wild in forests, thickets, and fields at elevations up to 1,500 m above sea level. Prefers shaded places or full sunlight, moist soil with good drainage.

Morphology

  • Root a taproot, light brown in color.
  • Stem woody, very many branches, if scratched exudes toxic white sap, twigs jointed, purplish-green in color.
  • Leaves single, somewhat long, opposite or alternate, oval to elongated lance-shaped, tip and base tapering, serrated edges, pinnate venation protruding on the underside. Upper color dark green and underside dark red, young leaves more glossy in color.
  • Flowers compound, emerging from the stem tip or branch tip, small, yellow in color, arranged in racemes. Male flowers more numerous than female flowers. Corolla not visible, pistils 3, curved.
  • Fruit round, small, 3-lobed, 1 cm in diameter.
  • Seeds round, small, light brown in color.

Cultivation

Propagated by seed, stem cuttings, air layering.

1. Concoction for postpartum or miscarriage bleeding

  • Wash dried sambang darah root about the size of 1½ pinky fingers, slice thinly.
  • Boil with 2 glasses of water until the water is reduced by half, strain and cool.
  • Drink twice a day, ½ glass each time.

  • Boil 15 sambang darah leaves with 3 glasses of water until reduced to 2 glasses of water, strain and cool.
