Gazania linearis (Thunb.) Druce

Gazania linearis, known by the cultivar name Colorado Gold, is native to grassy slopes and rocky cliffs in the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa, popularly called the 'treasure flower' for its bright, large flowers in yellow-orange shades. Its drought-tolerant nature makes it a popular choice as a ground cover and ornamental, while traditionally this plant has also been reported to be used to address toothache and headache.

Gazania linearis grows well in full sun and well-drained soil, with plant spacing of 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) apart to form a ground-covering mat. These flowers can tolerate almost any soil type—alkaline, acidic, loamy, clay, and sandy—as long as the soil is well-drained, although they prefer good, fertile loam.

• Leaves varying from narrowly elliptic and entire to deeply lobed, reaching 4 inches (10 cm) long, up to 0.8 inches (2 cm) wide, dark green on the upper surface and covered with white hairs on the lower surface.
• Flowers produce large flower heads, aster-like, bright yellow and orange with a diameter up to 3 inches (8 cm).
• Fruit small achenes covered with hairs several times longer than the fruit body.

This plant is propagated by seed, cuttings, or clump division.
