Summary

Akar ipoh putih (Hugonia griffithiana) is a liana up to 30 meters long from the Linaceae family distributed from India to Malesia. The highly toxic sap of its bark is traditionally used as an ingredient in arrow poison during intertribal warfare, while in Sarawak its wood is used to make machete handles. Akar ipoh putih is also traditionally used to treat stomach ache and malaria.

Agroecology

Akar ipoh putih is often found growing in open areas, such as farmland, secondary forest, and rainforest, at elevations up to 1,500 m asl. On fairly variable soils, but often found in swampy places.

Morphology

  • Stem up to 3 cm in diameter, white or nearly white, its branches bearing stiff hooks. Stipules triangular to ovate shaped.
  • Leaves alternate, elliptic to ovate shaped, with a blunt caudate to acuminate apex, rarely rounded, base cuneate, margin slightly toothed, green, glossy. Veins about 7-10 pairs, more or less curving upward and nearly reaching the margin.
  • Flowers in small clusters in the leaf axil. Sepals elliptic to ovate or round. Petals thin, elliptic to obovate, white to bright yellow, pale orange or reddish brown. Stamens yellow, anthers bright yellow, pistil pale yellow.
  • Fruit a drupe, yellow to red (8 mm in diameter), seeded, longitudinally ribbed when dry, ovoid to ellipsoid, mesocarp ± ribbed, fibrous.
  • Seeds numbering 1 (or 2), attached at the ventral side, semi-ovoid, testa thin.

Cultivation

Propagation is done generatively using seed.

1. Malaria

  • Prepare akar ipoh root then wash until clean.
  • Boil the root with 150 ml until it boils.
  • Drink 3 times a day for 3 days.

2. Rheumatism

  • Take bark of the akar ipoh putih plant.
  • Heat then pound until fine.
  • Apply directly to the rheumatic area to relieve it.
