Summary

Bunga batavia (Jatropha integerrima) is a shrub 2.5-5 meters tall of the Euphorbiaceae family, native to Cuba, now distributed as far as Asia and Africa. Its ability to flower almost year-round makes it a favorite ornamental. Scientific research shows bunga batavia has antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties, besides being traditionally used to treat warts and rheumatism.

Agroecology

Bunga batavia grows best in partial shade to full sunlight, in semi-arid regions in the tropics and subtropics. This plant is drought and heat resistant, but not adapted to saline environments, resistant to temperatures of -4°C, can grow in various well-drained soils, at a pH range from alkaline to acidic. Average annual rainfall 475-2,500 mm/year. Bunga batavia is commonly found in sandy semi-arid regions, near swampy areas, in disturbed soil, limestone cliffs and humus pockets in forests, and cultivated in urban areas.

Morphology

  • Stem upright, dark brown, striated, many-branched, woody, smooth, short shoots absent, watery latex, colorless on younger shoots, cloudy whitish on older branches.
  • Leaves green, simple, alternate, oblong to ovate shaped with three lobes, rounded base, tapering leaf tip, pinnate veins, smooth.
  • Flowers belong to the multi-cluster or grouped category, bisexual, star-shaped and colored red to bright red.
  • Fruit an ovate capsule, 1-1.3 × 0.7-1.1 cm, splitting explosively.
  • Seeds cream, speckled with red and black, ellipse-shaped, 7-10 × 4-6.5 mm, caruncle relatively small, prominent.

Cultivation

Bunga batavia can be propagated using seed or cuttings. For cultivation, mostly stem cuttings are used.

Benefits

Used in the treatment of warts, tumors, rheumatism, herpes, pruritus, toothache, scabies, eczema and ringworm, has laxative properties.
