Summary

Trumpet lily (Lilium longiflorum) is a herb 45-90 cm tall from the Liliaceae family native to the southern islands of Japan and Taiwan, popular as a cut flower in Easter flower arrangements. Its bulb, stem, and leaves can be cooked as food, while its flower essential oil is used in perfume. Trumpet lily is traditionally used to treat cough, hemoptysis, and insomnia in fever patients.

Agroecology

Trumpet lily can grow in Indonesia in highland areas at 1000-1200 m asl. It grows easily on average at moderate humidity, well-drained soil under full sun to shade. It prefers fertile organic soil. It performs best with the upper part of the plant in full sun and the roots in shade. Mulch can be used to keep the root zone cool. The bulb requires good moisture year-round. Do not let the soil dry out. After flowering, cut the plant back only after the leaves and stem have turned yellow.

Morphology

  • Bulb round or globe-shaped, 2.5-5 cm in diameter.
  • Stem upright, unbranched and green.
  • Leaves alternate, simple, sessile, linear-lanceolate, up to 15 cm long.
  • Flowers trumpet-shaped, fragrant and showy. Corolla white with light purple lines on the outside, pollen yellow.
  • Fruit a capsule with thin skin, obovate shaped, splitting into two cavities when ripe, 1-5 seeds.
  • Seeds large, flat and round in shape, with a mucilage-coated seed coat.

Cultivation

Propagation can be done through seed and bulbs.
