Summary

Kawista (Limonia acidissima) is a tree up to 12 meters tall of the Rutaceae family, a citrus relative native to the western Himalayas and South India, distributed as far as Java and Nusa Tenggara. In Aceh, its fruit known as buah batok becomes an ingredient in the region's signature rujak and traditional syrup. Kawista is traditionally believed to relieve diarrhea, intestinal inflammation, and help control blood sugar levels.

Agroecology

This plant grows in tropical climate areas or areas that are occasionally dry, up to elevations of 450 m above sea level. Grows best at an average annual temperature in the range of 20-29°C and rainfall ranging between 800-1,200 mm/year. Prefers deep loamy soil, well-drained and moist, in full sunlight, soil pH 5-6.

Morphology

  • Stem rough, woody, thorny, short thorns, straight, 2-5 cm long.
  • Leaves dark green and rough in color.
  • Flowers small, numerous, dull or greenish-red.
  • Fruit a round berry, large, while the fruit skin is hard, woody and grayish-white in color. Kawista pulp is brown in color, sticky, aromatic and fragrant-smelling

Cultivation

  • Propagated using seed and root cuttings.
  • Seed: Dry the seeds in the sun for several hours. Soak in water for one day, then plant.
  • Root cuttings: Plant the plant in a perforated polybag. Once the roots grow well and pierce through the polybag, cut the root. After 1 week shoots will grow

Coumarin, sterol, umbelliferone, dictamnine, xanthotoxol, quinone, steroid, flavonoid, feronia lactone, geranylumbelliferone, bergapten, osthol, isopimpinellin, marmesin, marmin.

Simplisia

  • Collect kawista fruit, wet-sort, wash with running water to reduce the possibility of contamination.
  • Chop into small pieces then dry in the sun for approximately 7 days until dried simplisia is produced.
  • Store in a clean, airtight place
