Ludwigia perennis L.

Ludwigia perennis is an erect annual herb up to 1 meter tall from the Onagraceae family native to tropical Africa, spreading as far as Australia and New Caledonia. Its leaves are cooked and eaten as a vegetable, while this plant is also an important ingredient in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine. Ludwigia perennis is traditionally used to reduce fever and treat eczema and ringworm.

Ludwigia perennis is commonly found in wet places, sandy riverbeds, along rivers, and in rice fields. This plant is found growing at elevations up to 1500 m. Terrestrial.

• Roots taproot.
• Stem branched, subglabrous or slightly hairy on younger parts.
• Leaves 2−6 × 0.5−15 cm, elliptic-lanceolate, base tapering, tip acute to sharply pointed, hairless.
• Flowers sessile, 4-merous. Calyx tube adnate to the ovary; lobes 4, c. 2 mm long, sharply ovate. Petals 4-5 mm, elliptic, yellow. Stamens 4; filaments short. Ovary 1-1.5 cm long, linear, 4-celled, 4-angled. Ovules numerous.
• Fruit a capsule 3-16 (19) mm long, thin-walled, hairless or puberulent, terete, pale brown, loculicidal easily and irregularly; capsule sessile or on a pedicel up to 6 mm long, often somewhat nodding.
• Seeds 0.3-0.5 × 0.2-0.25 mm in size, compound in each locule of the capsule, brown with fine brown lines, round ellipsoid, seed ridge very narrow and inconspicuous

Propagation is done generatively using seed.
