Ludwigia sedoides (Bonpl.) H.Hara

Tanaman Mosaik

Onagraceae

Location in the garden Aquatic

Summary

Ludwigia sedoides or mosaic plant is native to tropical America, stretching from Mexico to Paraguay, and has now also been introduced to the Lesser Sunda Islands and Thailand. This aquatic plant is known for its unique geometrically shaped leaves with toothed margins, spreading densely across the water surface, making it popular as an aquarium or aquascape ornamental.

Agroecology

Mosaic plant is a tropical plant found mainly in swamps; mosaic plant does best in full sun, although it can tolerate some shade. Alkaline water is not conducive for this plant, so be sure not to let the pH exceed 8, although 5.5 to 7.5 seems to be the sweet spot for this unique plant. L. sedoides is not tolerant of cold temperatures—in fact, if the water temperature drops well below about 21°C, mosaic plant will struggle to grow. Below 18.3°C, most mosaic plants begin to die. Keeping the water between 21-26.6°C is best for sustained growth, healthy leaves, and colorful blooms.

Morphology

  • Roots fibrous.
  • Stem reddish, brittle.
  • Leaves diamond-shaped with a toothed margin, spreading outward forming a mosaic-like rosette. The margins of the middle and older leaves turn bright red when the plant is grown under bright light. The leaf rosette fully extends during the day with gaps between leaves. At night, the rosette contracts such that the leaves overlap each other.
  • Flowers bright yellow, cup-shaped, solitary, produced in the leaf axils from June to August in its native habitat.
  • Fruit an easily bursting capsule.
