Mahang Damar

Euphorbiaceae

Location in the garden Main

Summary

Mahang damar (Macaranga triloba) is a tree up to 35 meters tall from the Euphorbiaceae family spread from Kalimantan to Myanmar and the Philippines. The Talang Mamak people in Jambi traditionally use this plant to treat diarrhea and canker sores, while its young leaves are eaten and its root produces a yellow dye. Research shows mahang damar has potential as a cancer-preventive material.

Agroecology

Mahang damar is classified as a pioneer plant that makes up secondary forests, found from lowlands up to an elevation of about 1,400 m asl. Mahang damar grows in various habitat conditions, including dry dipterocarp forests, swamp forest edges, and it is also one of the few mahang species able to live in forests that experience periodic dry seasons.

Morphology

  • Roots a strong taproot.
  • Stem branch-free portion can reach 25 m, round, smooth, somewhat grayish-green, sometimes with small buttress roots. The outer bark is somewhat thick, thinly fleshy and yellowish-white, and somewhat sticky.
  • Leaves arranged singly, three-lobed, limp, upper and lower leaf surfaces green, but the underside is rougher and slightly hairy.
  • Flowers male and female separate, the male relatively smaller than the female flower. Small yellow flowers, arranged in panicles.
  • Fruit a box divided into three chambers, small and hard.

Cultivation

Cultivation of mahang damar is usually done by propagating from seeds; other methods have never been used.
