Flame of Irian (Mucuna bennettii) is a climbing plant up to 30 meters long from the Fabaceae family native to Papua, Sulawesi, and as far as Vanuatu, found in the Arfak Mountains nature reserve area. Its strong stems are used as binding material in traditional bridge construction. The Arfak tribe has passed down the use of Flame of Irian in ethno-medicine for generations, including treating shortness of breath.

Flame of Irian is a tropical plant and will also thrive in semi-tropical regions. This plant grows optimally in lowland forest with moist, humus-rich soil types. Prefers hot air with temperatures ranging 30-35°C. Can grow under direct sun or partial shade. This species is found in the wild on rocky clay, limestone, granite, volcanic, and sedimentary soil.

• Stem brown with a thick bark that is difficult to peel, and as it ages, the bark thickens further and resembles the bark of a woody tree. Branch size can reach 20 cm on the main stem and at secondary or tertiary branchings, and toward the tip varies from small when newly grown and trailing about 0.5 cm to 15 cm or even more.
• Leaves glossy green, trifoliate, leaf blade ovate shaped, leaves arranged alternately along the stem, veins pinnate.
• Flowers a cluster of bright red flowers tiered in a flower arrangement. The flower cluster consists of flowers shaped like tiger claws.
• Fruit a pod with hairy skin.
• Seeds oval round shaped, dark brown when ripe.
