Summary
Fragrant pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is a shrub up to 2 meters tall of the Pandanaceae family, native to Southeast Asia and spreading to other tropical regions. Its distinctively fragrant leaves are essential to many Nusantara snacks, and are also used for weaving, roofing, and as a natural fragrance. Traditionally, fragrant pandan is also believed to stimulate appetite and relieve rheumatism.
Agroecology
Grows wild along riverbanks, swamps, and other somewhat moist locations. Thrives from coastal areas up to elevations of 500 m above sea level. Favors locations with full sun.
Morphology
- Roots taproot, white.
- Stem round with leaf scar marks and branching.
- Leaves simple, ribbon-shaped with a tapering tip and smooth margins, green, reaching a length of 55-75 cm and a width of 4-5 cm.
- Flowers compound and cluster-shaped, dioecious, white.
Cultivation
- Propagated vegetatively using single shoots with hanging roots.
- Seedling sowing, with a planting spacing of 10 x 10 cm in the nursery.
- Planting, planting holes 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm, spacing 40 cm x 40 cm in the production field.

Simplisia
- Select a sufficient amount of fresh pandan leaves.
- Wash the material thoroughly and drain.
- Chop the leaves, then sun-dry for ± 7 days.

1. Addressing Diabetes
- Prepare fresh fragrant pandan root, wash thoroughly.
- Cut into pieces, then dry.
- Take 1 handful of the dried root and boil in 1 L of water until boiling.
- Drink the water regularly.
2. Soothing the Throat or Asthma
- Prepare 25 g pandan leaves, 70 g lemongrass, 20 g red ginger, 30 g mature turmeric, 5 g star anise, and 5 g cinnamon.
- Boil all ingredients in 2 cups of water until boiling and reduced to 1 cup.
- Drink while warm.
