Summary
Katumpangan (Pilea microphylla) is a succulent herb 0.2-0.3 meters tall from the Urticaceae family that originates from Mexico to northern South America, now spread across most tropical countries as a unique ornamental plant. In Panama, a decoction of the stem is drunk for diarrhea, while in Trinidad and Tobago its leaves are used for inflammation and as a uterine cleanser. Research has proven katumpangan to be antioxidant and antidiabetic.
Agroecology
Prefers a position in partial shade. Requires moist but well-drained soil, and can tolerate brief periods of waterlogged soil. Tolerant of various soil types.
Morphology
- Roots taproot and branching, resembling whitish fibrous roots.
- Stem slender, angular, green with a purple tinge.
- Leaves appear in two rows, small and fleshy stalked, lanceolate to segmented shape with a smooth margin (0.6-1.2 cm long).
- Flowers appear in the leaf axils, very small and crowded in small cymes that are greenish or tinged red and less than 1 mm long.
- Fruit small, greenish.
- Seeds very small, brownish.
Cultivation
Propagation by stem tip cuttings because they root easily.
Chemical Content
Flavonoid quercetin, rutin, chlorogenic acid, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, isorhoifolin), phenolic compounds: quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid, apigenin-7-O-rutinoside, apigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, and quercetin.

Used as a diuretic, remedy for diarrhea and asthma, wounds, bruises, diabetes, for inflammation, and as a uterine cleanser.

- Take fresh katumpangan leaves as needed and wash until clean.

- Boil the stem until boiling.
- Strain the decoction.
