Summary

Cincau batang (Premna trichostoma) is an upright-stemmed shrub up to 4 meters tall of the Lamiaceae family, a plant native to Indonesia distributed in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Java. Its high-fiber leaves are commonly processed by communities into refreshing cincau jelly. Traditionally, cincau batang is also believed to relieve canker sores, internal heat, and help lower blood pressure.

Agroecology

Adapted to grow in lowlands as well as highlands, namely 50-1,000 m above sea level, in conditions without water shortage. Requires adequate sunlight.

Morphology

  • Stem upright, cylindrical, 1-4 m tall, round, woody, green in color, glossy, has aerial roots at each node.
  • Leaves smooth upper surface, thin, opposite leaflets, 15-20 cm long, oblong oval shaped, curved pinnate venation.
  • Flowers clustered at twig tips or axils, bisexual, 4-5 petals, white petals.
  • Fruit a thin-skinned drupe, hairless, not fleshy.
  • Seeds membraned, mucilaginous.

Cultivation

Propagated generatively (by seed), and vegetatively (stem cuttings).

Simplisia

  • Pick leaves starting from the 5th leaf toward the base, then wash thoroughly with running water.
  • Cut the leaves into small pieces.
  • Dry by oven at 50°C for approximately 20-24 hours.
  • Store in a closed container or airtight plastic

1. Cincau Batang Drink to Lower Blood Pressure in Women with Hypertension

  • Take 15 cincau leaves then wash thoroughly, and drain.
  • Steep the cincau leaves with hot water, then drain.
  • In a container, mix the steeped cincau leaves with a little warm water then knead with your hands until the leaves break down, then add 600 ml of water gradually until the jelly comes out. Then strain.
  • Store in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Can be enjoyed with coconut milk and palm sugar.
