Summary

Sanchezia oblonga or cacak gading is native to Bolivia, northern Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, later introduced to various other tropical countries as an ornamental thanks to its striking leaves and flowers. Research shows this plant also has potential as an antifungal and antibacterial agent, even showing activity against leukemia cells.

Agroecology

Commonly found in wet habitats from sea level up to about 200 m with warm temperatures and high water availability. It can grow well in open sunny areas as well as in shaded areas in the understory of native forests and disturbed forests. It is also tolerant of saline conditions. Mean annual temperature 15-35°C, mean annual rainfall 800-3,000 mm.

Morphology

  • Stem smooth, bright green or purple.
  • Leaves simple, opposite, blade oblong to elliptic, 10-40 cm long, green or with yellow veins.
  • Flowers continuous throughout the year; several flowers, held in clusters on upright terminal spikes sometimes branching at the base, with an orange-yolk to red stalk below each flower cluster. Corolla of fused petals, tubular, 4.5-5.5 cm long with five short, round lobes, yellow to orange, with orange oblanceolate sepals half its length, two protruding stamens.
  • Fruit a narrow cylindrical capsule, rarely formed.

Cultivation

Propagation is done generatively with seed or vegetatively with stem cuttings.

Chemical Content

Phytosterol, flavonol glycosides, benzyl alcohol glycosides, sinapic acid glycoside esters, phenylpropane glycerides and rosmarinic acid derivatives, phenylpropane glycerides.
