Schaueria calytricha (Otto ex Hook.) Orb.
Summary
Schaueria calytricha or kembang emas is a flowering species native to tropical Brazil, specifically Rio de Janeiro. Its unique flower shape when in bloom and its striking color make this plant favored as an ornamental, for both indoor and outdoor planting.
Agroecology
Kembang emas can be found growing in rainforests, at elevations from 150 to 700 m asl. This species is best planted in somewhat coarse, fertile, consistently moist but well-drained soil, in a position in full sun in tropical regions, or partial shade. Its best growth occurs in humid climates where temperatures rise to 75-80°F during the day but drop to a minimum of 60°F at night. Kembang emas is not frost-tolerant.
Morphology
- Roots a taproot.
- Stem young subquadrate, woody, hairless or hairy with eglandular trichomes, concentrated in 2 rows.
- Leaves simple or unifoliate, opposite, green, glossy, ovate to lanceolate or rarely oblong, base pointed to heart-shaped or rarely rounded, tip pointed to attenuate, margin entire or wavy, veins pinnate, surface hairless or with eglandular trichomes (usually confined to the main vein, at least on the upper or adaxial surface).
- Flowers bisexual, 3-5 flowers, stalks about 3-7 mm long. Bracts yellow, linear-triangular. Calyx yellow, long, linear-triangular, hispidulous with upright eglandular and sessile glandular trichomes usually only on the adaxial surface. Corolla cream to pale yellow, outer part hairless or hispidulous with upright eglandular trichomes on the veins, inner part puberulent with flexible eglandular trichomes, tubular, widening toward the throat, proximal part narrowing, upper lip notched and lower lip three-lobed. Stamens inserted at the base of the corolla tube, filaments hispidulous. Inflorescence consisting of several flowers surrounded by a dense yellow cluster of hair-like bracts and sepals. The tubular flowers last only a few days, but the yellow hair-like bracts stay fresh for weeks.
- Fruit a capsule, hairless, containing only a few seeds, opening forcibly with explosive dehiscence.
- Seeds lenticular, reticulate with microgranules when immature.
