Summary

Akar ular (Scindapsus hederaceus) is a climbing plant up to 20 meters long from the Araceae family native to Indo-China, distributed as far as Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Its beautiful dark green foliage makes it a popular garden and indoor ornamental. In Peninsular Malaysia, a decoction of akar ular stem is traditionally used as a liniment for rheumatism.

Agroecology

S. hederaceus lives in lowland and lower montane forests up to elevations of 1,500 m asl. It climbs on tree trunks, sometimes also on rocks, and is also found in secondary forests and shrublands, even on roadside trees. This plant can grow in fully shaded to partially shaded conditions, and grows more easily in moist, fertile loamy soil.

Morphology

  • Stem underground stem in the form of a somewhat round stolon tuber, up to 4 cm in diameter and 2 cm tall, white, with stolons measuring 10 × 1 cm, pseudostem green, mottled gray and pink.
  • Leaves simple, bifoliate, scale leaf up to 20 cm long, purple in color. Petiole 1 cm long, similarly colored to the pseudostem. Leaf blade sword-like and spreading, ovate, 10-20 × 4-6 cm, margin entire, apex pointed, ending in a 1 cm point, base tapering, leaf blade plain green, with veins visible above, the underside paler.
  • Flowers beneath the foliage, peduncle 5-20 cm long, mottled green and pink, spathe tube cylindrical, 4-6 × 1-1.2 cm, green with thin white lines, the rim of the spathe mouth curved. Spathe blade lanceolate, 5-8 × 3-4 cm, green, reddish brown, ending in a brown tail up to 25 cm long. Spadix appendix well exserted from the tube, 5-6 cm long × 3-4 mm wide, pale green, sturdy, cylindrical, ending in a rounded, rugose tip curving forward, sessile, pistillate inflorescence with green hairs above the fertile part, fertile zone staminate or pistillate, cylindrical, 1.5-2 cm long; staminate flowers loosely arranged, pistillate flowers densely arranged, ovary bottle-shaped, green, stigma sessile, penicillate, white. Infructescence on an upright stalk, round, 3-5 cm.
  • Fruit reddish orange when ripe, 8-10 × 5-7 mm, rounded at the top, containing 3 seeds per fruit.
  • Seeds round, 3-4 mm in diameter.

Akar ular can be propagated with seed or stem cuttings.
