Summary
Cakar ayam (Selaginella doederleinii) is a herb 15-35 cm tall of the Selaginellaceae family, distributed from India and China to Malaysia, cultivated in Sumatra, Java, and Maluku. This fern-ally plant has traditionally been used in Chinese folk remedies to relieve sore throat and joint inflammation. Cakar ayam is also believed to help address hepatitis and respiratory tract infections.
Agroecology
This plant grows wild along riverbanks, large wet rocks and on wet cliff walls, from elevations of 400-750 m above sea level, average temperature 20-25 °C. Commonly found in humid, wet forests. This plant is not tolerant of direct sunlight and requires up to 80% shade.
Morphology
- Roots fibrous, emerging from the branching, blackish-brown in color.
- Stem upright, round, tough, forking branches, brownish-white.
- Leaves small, 4-5 mm long, 2 mm wide, oblong shaped, tapering tip, flat base. Dark green on top, light green underneath. Arranged left and right of the main stem down to its branches, resembling a chicken's claw with its scales.
Cultivation
Plant propagation by stump, namely uprooting the wild plant and transplanting it to a cultivation site.
