Selenicereus megalanthus (K.Schum. ex Vaupel) Moran
Summary
Yellow dragon fruit (Selenicereus megalanthus) is a climbing succulent from the Cactaceae family, an endemic species of Mexico and South America cultivated for its fruit. Its calcium content is higher than red dragon fruit, while its seeds are rich in omega fatty acids. Yellow dragon fruit is believed to help detoxify the body and prevent anemia.
Agroecology
Selenicereus megalanthus is an exotic plant that can tolerate very high temperatures, and sometimes low temperatures down to 0°C. This species can grow well in relatively infertile or nutrient-poor soil (even on rocky soil), in soil that reacts relatively acidic to saline soil, and is drought-tolerant (soil water conditions near the wilting point). This species also requires well-drained soil with a pH of 6 or lower. S. megalanthus does not tolerate waterlogging.
Morphology
- Roots filiform, with a moderate amount of root hairs, yellowish-white in color, and having a fibrous root system.
- Stem herbaceous (containing a lot of water) with a smooth surface due to a waxy coating, stem angular (triangular), green, with short spines along the stem or branch edges. Has a forking branching system where each stem produces 2 branches. The stem has aerial roots.
- Flowers trumpet or funnel-shaped, white. Pericarpel ovoid or somewhat round. Tubercles flattened and large. Stamens numerous and yellow.
- Fruit oblong shaped, with yellow fruit skin, white flesh with black seeds inside. No bracts/scales on the fruit skin surface, but short spines surround the fruit. Taste somewhat sweet.
