Sobralia macrantha Lindl.

Sobralia macrantha is a large-flowered terrestrial orchid, with a petal diameter reaching about 23 cm, that grows wild from Mexico to Central America. Besides being captivating as an ornamental for the beauty of its flowers, in the Veracruz region this orchid is also known as a traditional remedy for reducing fever.

Thrives best when kept in the cool section of an orchid house, mean coldest temperature ranging between 10-15°C. A light-free soil is suitable for this type of orchid, which should consist of a mixture of sandy peat and light loam.

• Roots thick and fleshy.
• Stem upright, clustered, terete, hairless, jointed.
• Leaves spreading from each joint, lanceolate, stiff, numerous and very narrowly tapering nearly to a tail-like point, plicate, base forming a brown sheath around the stem.
• Flowers very large, few per stem, terminal, one flower (per stem) open at a time, with a large leafy stem at its base resembling the leafy stem but much smaller. Flowers rose-purple in color. Sepals oblong, margin entire, petals much broader, otherwise similar but the upper margin waved and crisped. Lip very large, the flower's lower half forming a laterally compressed tube around the column, its apex expanding into a broad flattened lamella, two-lobed, crisped, with a pale yellow spot, somewhat heart-shaped at the base. Column elongated, clavate, with lateral teeth on each side, anther on top.

Propagation using root division. Root division is done carefully to avoid breaking, because if broken, side roots rarely or never form and it will rot.
