Summary

Ekor kucing mini (Acalypha chamaedrifolia) is a herb 10-50 cm tall from the Euphorbiaceae family native to Southern Florida and the Caribbean. Its small, cat's tail-shaped flowers make it popular as a potted and hanging basket ornamental. Ekor kucing mini is also used as a hair and skin conditioning ingredient in commercial cosmetics.

Agroecology

Ekor kucing mini is a fast-growing flowering plant. This species can be found in rocky pine forests and disturbed areas, at elevations between 10-1,400 m asl. It grows well in areas with average annual rainfall between 1,000-2,500 mm, in partially shaded positions or full sun, and moist, well-drained soil conditions.

Morphology

  • Stem cylindrical, round, green.
  • Leaves simple, ovate shaped with a rounded base and pointed tip, arranged in opposite pairs along the stem, margins crenate-dentate, veins pinnate, covered in hairs, green.
  • Flowers sessile, borne terminally, inflorescence a cylindrical raceme resembling a cat's tail and red in color. Male flowers very small, short-stalked, round in bud, calyx split into 4 small valvate sepals, stamens on a slightly raised receptacle, filaments free or basally connected. Female flowers generally sessile or subsessile, calyx of small imbricate sepals, ovary of 3 carpels, surface often muricate, puberulent or papillose, reddish tinged.
