Summary

Lengkuas genting (Alpinia conchigera) is a herb up to 0.6-1.5 meters tall of the Zingiberaceae family, distributed across Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, and China. Its rhizome is used to flavor dishes and make traditional alcohol, while its fruit is eaten as a vegetable. In Thailand, lengkuas genting is traditionally used to treat rheumatism and postpartum pain.

Agroecology

This plant thrives in moist environments, fertile loamy soil and requires partial shade at elevations between 600-1,000 m above sea level. Tolerant of low temperatures, commonly found around rice field areas or under the shade of trees such as oil palm and rubber.

Morphology

  • Rhizome white in color, fibrous tuber-shaped, has a distinctive fragrance.
  • Leaves lance-oblong with a short petiole about 5 mm and dark green in color. Leaf length 30 cm with a width up to 9 cm.
  • Flowers white with a reddish-brown line and 1.5 cm long.
  • Fruit round, pink in color, 8-10 mm wide. There are 3-5 seeds in each flower and it has a very fragrant smell.

Cultivation

  • Propagated by seed, done by soaking the seed first for 24 hours then planting in fertile, moist, sandy soil at a temperature of 22-24°C, will germinate in about 1 month.
  • Propagated using rhizome and planted in soil rich in organic matter.

Chemical Content

1′S-1′-acetoxychavicol acetate, trans-p-coumaryl diacetate, p-hydroxycinnamyl acetate, 1′S-1′-hydroxychavicol acetate, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol.

Simplisia

  • Prepare the rhizome, wash first to remove attached dirt and drain.
  • Cut the rhizome to a thickness of ± 4 mm and dry ± 5 days in the sun.
  • Once dry, grind until fine and sift using a 60 mesh sieve.
  • The simplisia is then stored in a closed, airtight container.

Traditional recipe Rheumatism from Lengkuas Genting

1. Rheumatism

  • Prepare 50 g lengkuas genting rhizome, 75 g coconut (made into 2 glasses of coconut milk equivalent to 400 ml), 25 g brown sugar, ½ tsp pepper.
  • Boil all ingredients until the water is reduced to 1 glass.
  • Drink the concoction little by little over 1 week.
