Summary
Gegatan harimau betina (Ampelocissus elegans) is a thickly wool-haired liana from the Vitaceae family distributed in Sumatra, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand, known as food for the Sumatran tiger before it hunts. This plant is taken from the wild as an ingredient in traditional remedies by the Karo people of North Sumatra. Its fruit is also used in Chinese remedies, while its leaves serve as a cooking seasoning.
Agroecology
Gegatan harimau betina is usually found growing on the edges of lowland dipterocarp forest and forest (primary rainforest, secondary rainforest). This species prefers sunlight as well as partial shade, and well-drained soil.
Morphology
- Stem covered with dense hairs that turn brown with age. Old stems become flattened. Tendrils solitary, 12-15 cm long. Stipules rounded, apex rounded.
- Leaves palmately compound, 3-lobed to 3-5-foliolate, green, terminal leaflet ovate shaped while lateral leaflets obliquely ovate shaped, leaf margin serrate or toothed, sinus blunt, apex tapering, veins pinnate, adaxial (upper) surface finely hairy yellowish green and woolly hairy on the veins, abaxial (lower) surface reddish brown woolly hairy (changing from white to brown with age). The brown leaf veins are very distinctive. Petiole short, nearly sessile. Stipels absent.
- Flowers inflorescence 21-38 cm long, a spiny panicle with bisexual flowers. Branches 16-19 pairs, each flower has 4-5 green petals, a green disc, and a dome-shaped calyx. Petal tip pointed, base angular. Filaments thin, anthers oblong, pistil oblong, four-grooved, ovary 2-celled.
- Fruit a berry, ovate shaped, red when ripe, 8-10 mm wide.
- Seeds 1-4 per fruit, round-obovate.
Cultivation
Propagation is done vegetatively with stem cuttings.
