Summary

Kayu gaharu (Aquilaria malaccensis) is a tree up to 40 meters tall of the Thymelaeaceae family, distributed across Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and India. Its distinctively fragrant wood is used as incense in religious ceremonies and highly valued fragrance material, with a recorded sample found by the Socfindo Conservation team in Aceh Singkil. Kayu gaharu is traditionally believed to relieve stomach ache, fever, and help improve sleep patterns.

Agroecology

Generally found in Indonesian forests at elevations of 0-850 m above sea level. Suitable for growing in hot climate areas with temperatures between 28-34°C, humidity around 80%, and rainfall between 1,000-2,000 mm/year.

Morphology

  • Root a taproot.
  • Stem hard woody, smooth, sometimes ridged. Bark light brown when young, becoming whiter and smoother with age.
  • Leaves single, spirally arranged, thin rough blade, oblong-lance-shaped, 3-3.5 cm wide, and 6-8 cm long.
  • Fruit green in color, egg-shaped, somewhat woody, sized 4 x 2.5 cm.
  • Seeds 2 per fruit, pear-shaped covered with orange-brown hair.

Cultivation

  • Propagated generatively (using seed).
  • Separate the seed from the fruit skin, soak the seed with an antifungal (regent) for 30 minutes. Air-dry for approximately 2 hours. Water the seed with a growth regulator dissolved in water such as atonik. Dry for 1 hour then sow.

Benzylacetone, guaiacol, palmitic acid and oleic acid, 4-phenyl-2-butanone, jinkoh-eremol, α-guaiene, caryophyllene oxide, eudesmol.

Simplisia

  • Clean gaharu leaves with running water and dry on paper.
  • Once the leaves have wilted, dry the leaves in an oven at a temperature of 40°C until dry.
  • Place the dried leaves in an airtight plastic container.
