Summary
Purwaceng gunung (Artemisia lactiflora) is a herb 50-150 cm tall of the Asteraceae family, distributed from Southeast Asia to Southern China and western India, generally growing wild in forests and along riverbanks. Its leaves are commonly cooked as a complementary vegetable in fish dishes since they can reduce the fishy smell. In China, this plant is traditionally used to address menstrual disorders and as an aphrodisiac tonic.
Agroecology
Grows optimally at elevations of 800-2,300 m above sea level. Widely adaptable, from two-season to four-season regions. Favors fertile soil with high humidity, slightly shaded conditions, cool, and protected from direct sunlight.
Morphology
- Roots fibrous, yellowish-white.
- Stem round, jointed, smooth, purplish-green.
- Leaves compound, leaflets shaped like a duck's foot, pointed tip, blunt base, toothed margins, distinct venation, green, glossy.
- Flowers compound, raceme at the stem tip, green calyx, star-shaped, 5-lobed, fine petals surrounding the flower disc bearing the stamens and pistil, ivory white.
- Seeds lanceolate, small, brown.
