Summary
Cempedak (Artocarpus integer) is a tree up to 15 meters tall of the Moraceae family, a plant native to Southeast Asia distributed from Tenasserim in Myanmar to Thailand and Indonesia. Its fruit and leaves can be eaten as a vegetable, while its wood is used to build boats and houses. Cempedak is also traditionally believed to maintain heart health and help promote breast milk flow.
Agroecology
This plant is naturally easily found in lowland tropical rainforests, growing ideally at elevations of 1-700 m above sea level, with rainfall of 2,500-3,000 mm/year, temperature 22-38 °C.
Morphology
- Roots taproot with very many branches.
- Stem straight and cylindrical, with bumps at the base. Bark gray in color and sometimes grayish-brown, sappy.
- Leaves thin, somewhat stiff, stalked, inverted egg-shaped to oblong, smooth edges, sized 2.5-5 x 5-25 cm, wedge-shaped to rounded base, tapering tip.
- Flowers emerge at leaf axils, pale green or yellowish.
- Fruit a compound accessory fruit, cylindrical to round shaped, 10-15 x 20-35 cm, greenish, yellowish to brownish, with soft thorn-like pyramidal bumps.
- Seeds flat round or elongated 2-3 cm.
Cultivation
- Propagated generatively (by seed) and vegetatively (budding).
- Planting distance 10 x 10 m or 12 x 12 m.

Simplisia
- Dry the tree bark by air-drying and protecting from direct sunlight (5 days), then shave it.
- Dry the shavings again in the same way for 2 days.
- Once dry, grind into powder.
- Store in a clean, airtight container.

1. Promoting Breast Milk Flow
- Remove the outer bark of the tree trunk.
- Wash thoroughly then cut into pieces 10-15 cm long.
- Take 3-5 pieces of bark, boil with 3 glasses of water until it boils.
- Drink 2-3 times a day, 1 glass each time.
2. Boils
- An adequate amount of cempedak leaves.
- Wash the leaves thoroughly then coat with coconut oil.
- Heat over low fire until wilted.
- Apply to the affected body part.
- Do this 3 times a day.
