Summary

Anggrek arundina or bamboo orchid (Arundina graminifolia) is an upright orchid 70-200 cm tall of the Orchidaceae family, widely distributed throughout tropical Asia, from China and India to the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Its bamboo-like shape makes it easily recognizable among other orchid types. Traditionally, this orchid is believed to prevent dysentery and help stop bleeding.

Agroecology

Grows well at elevations of 400-900 m above sea level, temperature 13-18.5 ºC. Generally found in locations near water and often lives in clumps at one spot. Prefers somewhat shaded, moist areas, not tolerant of direct sunlight.

Morphology

  • Stem jointed like bamboo, short, thick/large, wrapped with the base of the leaf sheath.
  • Leaves opposite, thick, large, somewhat stiff and hard, oblong tapering shape like grass, tapering leaf tip.
  • Flowers emerge at the stem tip, protected by the flower calyx, flower color depends on environmental conditions, in shaded places the dominant color is white.
