Summary
Lompat pitu (Thelypteris triphylla) is a fern from the Aspleniaceae family distributed from India to Australia, now declining in population due to urbanization and road construction. This plant is an ingredient in making traditional Karo oil from North Sumatra. Lompat pitu is traditionally used to relieve body aches.

Thelypteris triphylla is a terrestrial fern commonly found growing naturally in forests.
Morphology
- Rhizome long, about 0.5 cm thick, creeping, covered with scales, root hairs blackish brown.
- Scales (3 x 1 mm) linear-lanceolate, tip acuminate, margin entire, hairy, clathrate scales present at the base of the petiole, dark brown.
- Stipe on sterile fronds 6-20 x 0.2-0.3 cm, sometimes longer on fertile fronds, slender, grooved above, flat below. Green to brownish, densely hairy.
- Lamina (frond blade) about 7-18 x 5-11 cm, dark green on the adaxial side (upper surface) and light green on the abaxial side (lower surface), ovate and trifoliate (three-leaved), opposite, tip acuminate, tapering at the base, margin wavy to serrate, costules and veins clearly prominent on the abaxial side, quaternary veins (veinlets) spreading obliquely and parallel, costules densely hairy, all veins from adjacent costules meeting at the middle. Adaxial lamina hairless but abaxial with curved hairs along the costae and veinlets. Sori develop along the lamina veinlets, elongated to slightly curved, yellow. Sporangia capsular, with 2 curved hairs. Spores 40 x 30 µm, yellow, ellipsoid, monolete.

Plant propagation is by spores and vegetatively by rhizome.

1. Karo oil (treats body aches)
- Prepare the ingredients: Pirawas 50 g, male lidah kebo 50 g, lompat pitu 40 g, and 100 types of plant ingredients, packaged coconut oil/palm oil 6 l, salt 1 tbsp.
- Wash all ingredients clean and group them separately (leaves, dried ingredients, and citrus fruits).
- Leaf ingredients, onions, ginger, and citrus are all sliced but kept separate.
- Add the ingredients and stir until boiling and fragrant, finally add the salt.
- After that, the cooked oil can be removed and strained.
