Summary
Kayu rapat (Urceola laevigata) is a creeping climbing plant up to 10 meters long of the Apocynaceae family, a plant native to China distributed to the forests of India and Southeast Asia including Sumatra and Java. This plant is widely known as the main ingredient of jamu rapet kayu, traditionally used for generations to tighten the uterus and relieve postpartum pain. Kayu rapat is also believed to speed wound healing and improve blood circulation.
Agroecology
Grows wild in lowland forests up to 1,200 m above sea level. This plant can grow in barren soil with adequate sunlight.
Morphology
- Roots taproot, brown.
- Stem twining, round, woody and covered with brown hairs.
- Leaves simple, lanceolate, opposite, pinnate venation, tapering base and tip, smooth margins, reddish-green (young) turning green (mature).
- Flowers compound, panicle-shaped with a funnel-shaped corolla.
- Fruit a pod, pointed tip, containing 4-10 seeds.
- Seeds round, blackish-brown.
Cultivation
- Propagated generatively (using seed) or by taking wild seedlings from forests.
- Not yet widely cultivated and still grows in its natural habitat.
Chemical Content
Dimers (proanthocyanidin A-2 and proanthocyanidin A-6), trimers (cinnamtannin B-1 and aesculitannin B), proanthocyanidin A-2 4-benzylthioether, epicatechin, aesculitannin B, parameritannin A-1, saponins, polyphenols, quinones.

Simplisia
- Wash fresh wood thoroughly under running water.
- Dry on a tray in the sun and turn frequently, protect it when humid. Do this for several days.
